A former flight attendant of Malaysian-Indian descent is currently pursuing legal action against Singapore Airlines, seeking S$1.78 million (US$1.3 million) in damages. Durairaj Santiran, who served as a flight attendant with the airline from 2016 to 2021, alleges negligence on the part of his former employer, leading to a serious injury during a flight in 2019.

According to reports from The Straits Times, Santiran claims to have encountered a patch of grease on the floor of the economy-class galley during a long-haul flight from San Francisco to Singapore on September 6, 2019. Approximately two and a half hours before the scheduled landing, he slipped on this patch, falling backward and injuring his spine. This injury, diagnosed as a cervical disc prolapse, ultimately rendered him unable to continue working as a cabin crew member.
In his lawsuit, Santiran is seeking compensation totaling S$1.29 million for the loss of future earnings, as well as S$150,000 for future medical and transportation expenses, along with additional sums for other losses and expenses incurred.
Santiran asserts that Singapore Airlines failed in its duty to maintain a safe workplace environment, alleging that the airline neglected to ensure the aircraft's floors were free of hazards and lacked a proper cleaning system to prevent such accidents.
However, the airline has vehemently disputed Santiran's claims, denouncing them as invalid and false. Their legal representatives have stated that there was no evidence of a grease patch in the location described by Santiran, suggesting that the incident may have occurred elsewhere within the aircraft.
Legal proceedings for this case are ongoing, with hearings expected to continue over the next 10 days. Both parties have refrained from further comment while the matter is under judicial review.
