On July 18, BYD officially announced the pricing for its first 3 electric car models in Vietnam: Dolphin, Atto 3, and Seal. Prior to this, the Chinese automaker had organized test drives for the products in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in June.

The Dolphin model has only one version and is the most accessible model from BYD, with a listed price of 659 million VND. The BYD Atto 3 comes in 2 versions, Dynamic and Premium, with retail prices of 766 million VND and 886 million VND, respectively.

The BYD Seal also has 2 variants, starting at 1.119 billion VND for the Advanced version and going up to 1.359 billion VND for the Performance version.

The slightly higher pricing compared to the previously leaked prices by dealers has sparked some debate.

For the BYD Dolphin, this model has no direct competitor in Vietnam as it is positioned in the B-segment hatchback category. When compared to similar-sized gasoline models, the Dolphin's price is significantly higher, as the Suzuki Swift is priced at 559.9 million VND and the Mazda2 Sport ranges from 527 to 544 million VND.

Compared to electric cars, the BYD Dolphin could fill the gap between the VF 5 and VF 6, but the VinFast lineup is positioned as crossovers.

The BYD Dolphin is equipped with a 95-horsepower motor, delivering a maximum torque of 180Nm. With a 44.9 kWh battery pack, it provides a maximum range of 405km on a full charge.

The BYD Atto 3 has dimensions of 4,455mm in length, 1,875mm in width, and 1,615mm in height. The size of this Chinese electric car falls between the VinFast VF 6 and VF 7, with the Atto 3's price slightly higher than the VF 6 (765-855 million VND with battery) but cheaper than the VF 7 without the battery (850-999 million VND).

However, VinFast's products have the advantage of a nearly nationwide network of public charging stations. In addition, the Vietnamese automaker offers a free charging program for 1-2 years for customers purchasing a car.

Both versions of the BYD Atto 3 use electric motors with specifications of 201 horsepower and 310Nm. The battery pack capacities vary depending on the version, with the Dynamic variant using a 49.92kWh battery and the Premium variant using a 60.48kWh battery; providing respective ranges of 410km and 480km.

The listed price of the BYD Atto 3 is comparable to pure gasoline C-SUV models like the Mazda CX-5 (from 749 million VND) and Hyundai Tucson (from 769 million VND) (Photo: BYD).

Finally, the BYD Seal is in the D-segment sedan category. This model can be seen as a rare mainstream electric sedan choice in Vietnam, but its price is higher than some similarly sized gasoline models like the Mazda6 (769-809 million VND) or Kia K5 (859-999 million VND), comparable to the Toyota Camry (1,105-1,495 billion VND).

In the Advanced version, the BYD Seal is equipped with a rear-wheel-drive electric motor with a maximum power of 201 horsepower and a maximum torque of 310Nm, enabling acceleration from 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds. It comes with a 61.44kWh battery pack, providing a maximum range of 460km on a full charge.

The Performance variant has 2 electric motors (all-wheel drive) with technical specifications of 523 horsepower and 670Nm, accelerating from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds. With an 82.56kWh battery pack, the car has a maximum range of up to 520km.

For customers who place orders for BYD electric cars in the initial stage, the company will provide a handheld charger device, a wall-mounted 7kW charger (free installation), and a power converter.

With the home-installed charger, the BYD Dolphin takes about 7-8 hours to fully charge, the Atto 3 requires 7-10 hours depending on the version, and the Seal will take 9-12 hours. The battery packs on these models are of the Blade type, with fast charging support taking about 30 minutes to charge from 30-80%.

The BYD electric cars in Vietnam are covered by a 6-year or 150,000km warranty, while the battery is covered by an 8-year or 160,000km warranty, whichever comes first (Photo: BYD).

As the number one electric car brand in China, BYD has not yet established a widespread charging station network like VinFast. Instead, BYD electric cars can be charged at third-party stations such as EV One, EverCharge, Eboost, etc. However, these entities have not yet developed extensively, and the charging costs are not cheap.

For example, with EV One, the mobile app shows that the company has 37 charging stations operating nationwide. Among them, 3 fast charging stations of 180kW are located in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, with a charging fee of 9,900 VND/kWh; the remaining stations mostly have 11kW or 22kW capacities, with a charging fee of 7,900 VND/kWh.
