Places where making U-turns in cars is not allowed

According to Article 15 of the 2008 Road Traffic Law, drivers are not allowed to make U-turns in the following places:

- Sections of the road designated for pedestrian crossings

- On bridges

- Bridge entrances

- Underpasses

- Highways

- Road intersections at the same level as railway tracks

- Narrow roads

- Steep roads

- Sections of curved roads with obstructed visibility.

When making a U-turn, drivers must adhere to safety principles such as reducing speed and signaling their turn; giving way to pedestrians, cyclists using dedicated lanes for them; yielding to oncoming vehicles and only turning when it is observed not to cause obstruction or danger to others.

Within residential areas, drivers are only allowed to make U-turns at intersections and where there are signs allowing U-turns.

Fines for making improper U-turns in cars

Decree 100/2019/ND-CP and Decree 123/2021/ND-CP stipulate fines for drivers making U-turns in violation of regulations as follows:

- Fines ranging from 400,000 to 600,000 VND for:

+ Making U-turns against regulations in residential areas;

+ Making U-turns in pedestrian crossings, on bridges, bridge entrances, underpasses, excluding cases where traffic management at these areas has designated U-turn spots.

- Fines ranging from 800,000 VND to 1,000,000 VND for:

+ Making U-turns at road intersections at the same level as railway tracks; making U-turns on narrow roads, steep roads, curved roads with obstructed visibility, places with signs prohibiting U-turns for the type of vehicle being driven.

- Fines ranging from 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 VND for:

+ Making U-turns against regulations causing traffic congestion

+ Making U-turns in road underpasses.

In addition, violators may have their driving licenses suspended for 1 to 3 months.

- Fines ranging from 10,000,000 to 12,000,000 VND for:

+ Making improper U-turns causing traffic accidents.

+ Making U-turns on highways.

In addition, violators may have their driving licenses suspended for 2 to 4 months.
