Despite a 25-fold increase in sales, Mitsubishi Outlander still ranks at the bottom of the C-SUV segment

While being of interest to Vietnamese customers, the C-size SUV segment has been showing conflicting trends in the past 2 months. In July, as the market gradually warmed up, almost all of these vehicles saw a decrease in consumption, except for the Honda CR-V.

In August, coinciding with the "ghost month" - the annual low season, the market recorded a sharp decline. However, 3 out of 6 products in the C-SUV segment showed positive consumption growth, with the most significant increase being the Mitsubishi Outlander, up to 152.3%.

This breakthrough is still not enough to help the Outlander improve its position. With 217 units delivered in August, the Japanese model continues to be the most selective product in this group of vehicles.

Experts believe that the strong growth in Outlander's sales in August is mainly due to the promotional program from the manufacturer. Accordingly, this model is eligible for a 50%-100% reduction in registration fees depending on the version, while customers also receive some complimentary gifts.

The Mitsubishi Outlander is assembled domestically. In September, the company no longer supports registration fee reductions for this model, as the Government has issued Decree 109 reducing registration fees by 50% for domestic cars (Photo: Trung Nguyễn).

Compared to the general price range of the C-SUV segment, the suggested retail price of the Mitsubishi Outlander is relatively high (825-950 million VND). Despite significant incentives, the actual selling price of this model is still not as appealing as the Mazda CX-5 (749-979 million VND) or the Hyundai Tucson (769-919 million VND).

Additionally, the equipment factor is also a barrier for the Outlander. The current version of this model was introduced in 2018, so features and design are somewhat "outdated" compared to competitors.

In addition to the Outlander, the other 2 models that showed increased consumption in August were the Mazda CX-5 and the Kia Sportage. Among them, the CX-5 continues to be the most popular product in this segment. The Sportage still remains in 5th place, as the suggested retail price is not low (779-999 million VND) and there are few promotions.

Three products recorded a decrease in sales: Ford Territory, Hyundai Tucson, and Honda CR-V. Among them, the Territory still maintains the 2nd position in the C-SUV segment. The Honda CR-V dropped to 4th place, with sales decreasing by nearly 50%, selling only 291 units.

Considering cumulative sales from the beginning of the year until the end of August, the Honda CR-V is still in 3rd place in the C-SUV segment, after the Ford Territory and Mazda CX-5 (Photo: Nguyễn Lâm).

In the final months of the year, this group of vehicles is expected to become more vibrant as the Hyundai Tucson is upgraded to a new version, according to information from the dealer. TC Motor has not confirmed this information yet, but according to experts, this is plausible, as the current generation of Tucson was introduced in late 2021.

Sales consultants suggest that the Hyundai Tucson 2024 is likely to be introduced to Vietnamese customers in October or November (Photo: Hyundai).

The Hyundai Tucson 2024 is just a mid-life facelift, but the interior of the car has many new features. In the international market, the car comes with a panoramic curved screen including a digital instrument cluster connected to the entertainment screen, both with a size of 12.3 inches.

The driver area features a new 3-spoke steering wheel with integrated paddle shifters similar to the Santa Fe 2024. The central control cluster has been redesigned, and the center console area features a wireless charging pad.

In terms of performance, the Hyundai Tucson 2024 is likely to retain its 3 engine options as it is just a mid-life facelift. Firstly, there is a naturally aspirated 2.0L petrol engine (156 horsepower/192Nm), followed by a 2.0L diesel (186 horsepower/416Nm) and a 1.6L turbocharged petrol (180 horsepower and 265Nm).
