The hybrid system for the vehicle combines a 2.3L EcoBoost turbocharged engine with a 101-horsepower electric motor integrated into the gearbox. This system delivers 275 horsepower and 690Nm of torque, more powerful than the petrol and diesel versions, except for the Ranger Raptor.
Using an 11.8kWh battery pack, the vehicle is capable of running fully on electricity for 45km. Ford states that the battery can be fully charged in less than 4 hours, and the electric motor features energy regeneration during braking. In addition, Ford has upgraded the electrical system in the vehicle, allowing users to plug in tools, electronic devices, etc., with a standard 2.3kW power supply or an optional 6.9kW.
The engine power is transmitted to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission and an electronic e-4WD four-wheel drive system with rear differential lock. Ford engineers have tuned the suspension system settings to suit the weight distribution of the plug-in hybrid vehicle.
Similar to the purely internal combustion engine Ranger models, the PHEV model has a payload of 1 ton and a towing capacity of 3,500kg.
In terms of appearance, the plug-in hybrid version looks similar to the regular Ranger models, except for the addition of a charging port located near the fuel cap on the rear side. However, Ford has introduced a limited edition Stormtrak variant that is only available in the PHEV version.
The highlight of the Ranger Stormtrak model is the 18-inch alloy wheels, honeycomb grille, redesigned decal, and step up/down with PHEV lettering. The vehicle is painted in a unique gray color exclusive to the Stormtrak variant, but buyers can also choose the Agate Black color.
The standard features of the Ranger PHEV include LED matrix headlights and a flexible load rail system in the cargo bed.
Inside the vehicle, Ford has added premium materials, a B&O sound system with 10 speakers, and a 360-degree camera display on the 12-inch infotainment screen.
The Ford Ranger PHEV will be produced at the Silverton plant in South Africa. In addition to the European market, the vehicle will also be sold in Australia and New Zealand. There is no information available yet regarding other markets.
The vehicle is expected to reach the first customers in early next year, with the selling price to be announced closer to the launch date.
