Hundreds of BMW cars on the ship may end up on the market after fire

After extinguishing the fire, the fire and rescue team successfully rescued 260 BMW cars from the Fremantle Highway ship. A Taiwanese insurance company then sold these cars to a group of businesses in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

This group now wants to sell these cars for profit, but BMW is against it and wants to take the matter to court.

In July 2023, a fire broke out on the Fremantle Highway ship off the coast of the Netherlands, raising concerns that electric cars could be the cause. However, the investigation later dispelled this hypothesis. Nevertheless, the fire damaged a lot of cars, including many electric ones.

Despite this, the salvage company reported that about 1,000 cars, including 500 electric cars, seemed to be still in good condition and could be restored for use.

At the end of last year, BMW found out that 260 of their cars were rescued from this burning ship and sold to a group of businesses planning to sell them in the market. The German car manufacturer requested a ban on selling these cars due to safety concerns that may affect the reputation and brand image of the company.

BMW believes that the cars rescued from the burning ship are no longer safe and does not want them to be sold in the market. However, the group of companies that now owns these cars clearly disagrees with BMW's assessment of the condition of the cars.

A video from 9 months ago shows the controversial cars in question.

After nearly 6 months of waiting, the group of businesses in Rotterdam participated in a court hearing in The Hague on July 1, demanding the lifting of the ban on selling the cars in the market. They want to sell these cars immediately, arguing that they are not severely damaged. "There is only a little soot on the outside of the cars," the group's lawyer explained at the hearing.

The video shows that the rescue teams have removed the cars from the ship and then processed them as if they were new cars. But does that mean they are truly safe and can be used normally?

Certainly not. The risk of safety is one of the reasons BMW wanted to prevent the sale of these cars in the market since December last year. "The risks associated with these declared damaged cars are very high," a BMW lawyer stated. "These risks should not be underestimated."

They argue that the electrical wiring system, paint, and metal components have been affected by the fire, making the cars no longer safe. They mentioned that Audi and Mercedes have also transferred rescued cars from the Fremantle Highway ship to car recycling facilities.

In the court hearing on July 1, the group of businesses in Rotterdam proposed to sell the 260 BMW cars to countries outside Europe, where the automobile quality standards are not as strict as in Europe. This is said to help reduce the risk of damaging BMW's brand image. However, BMW still does not agree with this solution.

The court is expected to make a final ruling on this issue on July 15.
