The Kia Tasman will join the highly competitive mid-size pickup truck segment, competing with big names like Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. The product from the Korean automaker focuses on practicality and off-road capabilities, offering both petrol and diesel engine options.

While it may be controversial, the Kia Tasman certainly has a very striking and unique exterior design. The vehicle is boxy in shape, with a high front end, a vertical LED headlight cluster, a thick front bumper, and decorative details resembling a horn on the hood.

The wheel arches protrude high, squared off, seamlessly connecting to the front lighting cluster, and left unsurfaced. At the rear, the Tasman has a standard-size bed, with a square taillight cluster, large bed door, and an integrated rear bumper with integrated step up and down.

The standard configuration is a double cab as shown in the image above, with a length of 5,410mm. Ground clearance ranges from 224mm to 252mm.

In addition to the standard double cab configuration, the Tasman also has a single cab configuration (Photo: Kia).

If the "bold" exterior is sure to spark debate, then the interior of the Tasman is designed to be simple, logically laid out, and user-friendly.

The highlight is the digital cockpit with 3 screens integrated together, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 5-inch climate control screen, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. The premium Harman Kardon sound system with 8 speakers is an optional feature.

Sustainable materials are a trend, so Kia uses recycled PET fabric and bio-synthetic PU leather to create an eco-friendly interior space.

The interior of the vehicle features some practical features such as a folding table in the center console, a 33-liter storage compartment under the rear seats, and rear seats that can recline. Kia asserts that the head and shoulder space, as well as the legroom of the second-row seats, will be the largest in the mid-size pickup truck segment, thanks to the square shape of the Tasman.

The vehicle has a payload of 1,017-1,195kg, and a towing capacity of up to 3,500kg. Kia also introduces the Tasman's bed with a capacity of 1,173 liters, the largest in the segment. The bed features some notable elements such as lights, power outlets, a small table, and a sliding floor designed to make it easy to store heavy and large items.

The bed of the vehicle can be customized in 4 configurations: Single Decker, Double Decker, Sports Bar, and Ladder Rack, making the Tasman easily adaptable to the diverse needs of users. Kia will provide 13 different accessory products to enhance the practicality and style of the Tasman.

The Single Decker configuration includes a canopy and butterfly doors on both sides, combined with a roof rack. The Double Decker has a rear bed also equipped with butterfly doors, combined with a sliding bed cover. The Sports Bar configuration has a functional frame for attaching long objects such as snowboards or SUP boards. The Ladder Rack configuration has a ladder-style rack and also has a roof rack for installing a tent.

This pickup truck will only have two 4-cylinder engine options, petrol and diesel, with no pure electric or hybrid version, at least at the time of launch. The turbocharged 2.5L petrol engine delivers 277 horsepower and 421Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the 2.2L turbodiesel engine produces 207 horsepower and 441Nm of torque.

Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission; the diesel version can also be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Four-wheel drive is standard on higher trims, while standard trims use more economical 2-wheel drive. The Tasman has 4 terrain driving modes, including Sand, Mud, Snow, and Rock, with the X-Pro trim adding an electronic limited-slip differential (e-LD) and X-Trek mode for challenging terrains.

With a separate frame structure, the Tasman combines a front double wishbone suspension with a rear leaf spring axle and vertically mounted shock absorbers. Kia also equips the vehicle with a responsive shock-absorbing suspension with hydraulic rebound stop technology to minimize vibrations transmitted to the cabin and provide comfort even when driving on rough roads.

The Kia Tasman is a global model and will be available in many markets next year, starting with South Korea, then Australia, Africa, the Middle East... Kia has identified Saudi Arabia as a promising market, which is why the company chose to debut this pickup truck at the 2024 Jeddah International Auto Show currently taking place there.

In addition to the two biggest competitors, Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, the newcomer Kia Tasman will also have to compete with many other vehicles in the mid-size pickup truck segment, such as the Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara, VW Amarok, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, BYD Shark, and GWM Cannon Ute.
