Mazda CX-5 and Territory reduce fuel consumption, Honda CR-V increases sales figures

While the market is gradually warming up in July, the mid-size SUV segment is witnessing a downward trend, with the exception of the Honda CR-V. The Japanese crossover model is bucking the trend, recording an 82% increase in sales compared to June, with sales reaching 574 units.

This result helped the CR-V surpass the Hyundai Tucson in July, but it still only ranks 3rd in the mid-size SUV segment. The best-selling product is still the Mazda CX-5 with 1,044 units sold, a 17% decrease; followed by the Ford Territory with 737 units sold, a 1.4% decrease compared to June.

The growth is still a positive signal for the Honda CR-V, especially since this model has the highest price in the mid-size SUV segment, starting at 1.109 billion VND and going up to 1.31 billion VND.

The price is even comparable to popular D-segment SUVs like the Ford Everest (starting from 1.099 billion VND). In contrast, the C-SUV segment is quite competitive in terms of price, with the Mazda CX-5 priced between 749-979 million VND, and the Hyundai Tucson ranging from 769-919 million VND.

In fact, in recent months, Honda CR-V has been consistently offered with large discounts by the distributor, including 50-100% off registration fees depending on the version. This is also the basis for the model to improve its sales in July.

The discounts are only applicable to the pure petrol versions of the CR-V assembled domestically, while the e:HEV (hybrid) variant imported from Thailand is not eligible for the promotion. The reason is that the quantity of imported cars is not large, and there have been times when prices were inflated by 30-50 million VND at some dealerships.

The current Honda CR-V belongs to the latest generation, introduced in Vietnam in October 2023. The selling price of this model has increased by 61 million VND compared to the old generation, which has also been a controversial factor since the new car was introduced.

However, thanks to the new upgrades, the sales of this vehicle have still improved. In the first 7 months of 2024, Honda CR-V sold 2,912 units, an increase of nearly 17% compared to the same period last year.

Of course, in order to become a popular choice, attractive features and technology are still not enough. Most Vietnamese customers tend towards products that are affordable in the mid-size SUV segment, with adequate equipment and amenities, which is also the reason for the success of the Mazda CX-5.

In this group of vehicles, the Mitsubishi Outlander continues to be the least popular product. This model only sold 86 units in July, with total sales in 2024 amounting to 622 units.

The selling price of the Outlander is not as attractive as the CX-5 or Tucson, starting from 825 million VND and going up to 950 million VND, but it is often given 50-100% off registration fees by the company. However, the current version, introduced in 2018, has fallen behind its competitors in terms of technology and design.

This segment also has many other models such as MG HS, RX5, Haval H6, Subaru Forester... but their sales figures are not disclosed by the companies (Photo: Nguyễn Lâm).
