Phu Quoc advises tourists against giving in to beggars

Phu Quoc authorities have urged tourists not to give money to beggars, many of whom are children, in an effort to eradicate panhandling on the island and "enhance its reputation." Tourism management bodies are now also requiring people to queue in neat, orderly lines while they wait to enjoy public attractions, according to Phu Quoc's news portal.

Moreover, visitors are encouraged to dress respectfully when visiting pilgrimage sites and historical relics, and authorities have requested that tourists limit their alcohol consumption.

The southern island of Phu Quoc has been striving to rebuild its tourism image following last year’s crisis, during which price gouging and tourist scams became significant issues. The crisis led to a decline in visitor arrivals.

During this year’s seven-day Tet break, from Feb. 8-14, the island welcomed an estimated 52,000 international visitors, nearly six times more than last year's holiday period.

Panhandling is illegal under Vietnamese law. However, the gathering of panhandlers in front of tourist attractions and pilgrimage sites to solicit money from tourists is not uncommon.

Local authorities in many tourist destinations across Vietnam, including Da Nang and Nha Trang, have also pledged to crack down on street panhandling to safeguard the localities' tourism reputations.
