Tesla loses its crown in the European electric car market to BMW

For the first time in history, BMW has sold more electric cars than Tesla in Europe (Illustrative image: InsideEVs).

The data released by the analysis company JATO Dynamics shows that BMW sold 14,869 electric cars in July in Europe, while Tesla sold 14,561 cars.

Therefore, BMW sold 308 more electric cars than Tesla. Although this number is not large, it shows that the German car manufacturer has quietly become a "force" in the global electric car market, while still continuing to sell petrol cars (ICE), traditional hybrid cars (HEV), and plug-in hybrid cars (PHEV).

JATO Dynamics stated that Tesla witnessed a slight decline in sales in July in Europe, with both Model Y and Model 3 decreasing. Specifically, the sales of Model Y decreased by 16% to 9,544 units, while Model 3 decreased by 17% to 4,694 units.

The decline in Tesla's sales is an opportunity for BMW to rise to the number 1 position in the European electric car market.

In July, the total sales of electric cars in Europe decreased by 6% compared to the same period last year. JATO Dynamics mentioned that this decline may be due to the lack of government incentives and concerns about the depreciation of cars when reselling.

Although the BMW Group has advanced to the number 1 position, the best-selling electric car in Europe last month was still the Tesla Model Y, with sales of 9,544 units. The second best-selling electric car in Europe in July was the Volvo EX30, with 6,573 units, followed by the Volkswagen ID.4 with 5,295 units delivered to customers.

Two BMW models that made it to the Top 10 were the iX1 (4,305 units) and the i4 (4,198 units).

According to JATO Dynamics, the overall European market (including petrol and electric cars) grew by 2% compared to July last year, reaching 1.03 million cars, with 54% being SUVs.

Although the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric car in Europe in July, it still falls far behind the best-selling car in the overall market (including petrol and electric cars). This title belongs to the Dacia Sandero, with sales reaching 22,398 units, followed by the Volkswagen T-Roc with 19,254 units, and the Toyota Yaris Cross with 17,314 units.
