Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2017 retains equivalent value to luxury cars despite travelling over 80,000km

The Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado, and Alphard are three unique names in Toyota Vietnam's product lineup. These models have high prices as they are imported directly from Japan, making them exclusive and targeting a special group of customers.

This factor makes these cars relatively hold their value in the used car market. For example, a 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in this article has driven over 80,000km but is still being offered for sale by a private showroom in Hanoi for 1.72 billion VND.

Despite being 7 years old, this 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado still has a price comparable to or close to some luxury models like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (starting from 1.388 billion VND) or BMW X3 (starting from 1.789 billion VND). Taking into account the initial depreciation, this Land Cruiser Prado has lost about 800 million VND in value.

On average, this 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado depreciates by about 115 million VND per year (Photo: Lê Văn Độ).

Experts believe that besides the Japanese brand factor, the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado maintains its value mainly because its interior and exterior design is not very different from the current model.

The engine of the car is still a naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.7L, producing a maximum power of 164 horsepower and a maximum torque of 246Nm. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 4WD system.

Compared to the current model, the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado does not have the Toyota Safety Sense technology package and some conveniences like automatic wipers, cornering lights, auto-dimming lights... (Photo: Lê Văn Độ).

However, older models of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado are expected to depreciate significantly by the end of this year when the new generation of this model is introduced in Vietnam. This information has been shared by a dealer, but not confirmed by the Japanese car company.

Experts believe there is a basis for this, as the current Land Cruiser Prado is an updated version introduced in 2021.

In late April, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was trademarked in Vietnam by the Japanese car company (Screenshot).

Currently, Vietnamese customers are showing a great interest in the new generation of the Prado. The reason is that the interior and exterior design of this model has undergone a complete transformation, with a more angular and rugged look that also brings back memories of Toyota's past models.

The interior of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is quite appealing, but according to sales advisors, the audio system has only 14 standard speakers, not JBL like the current model (Photo: Toyota).

When it arrives in Vietnam, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is likely to be equipped with a new 2.4L turbocharged engine. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD, this engine produces 326 horsepower and 630Nm of torque, which are significantly higher than the current model.

The safety features of the car still highlight the Toyota Safety Sense technology package but upgraded to version 3.0, adding some features like intelligent cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot warning, emergency auto braking... (Photo: Toyota).

The selling price of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is likely to increase significantly, with some sources estimating a provisional figure of up to 3 billion VND. In contrast, the current model is priced at 2.628 billion VND.

Upon its release in Vietnam, the new Prado will still be imported as a whole car from Japan. Therefore, the supply of this model will still be limited, potentially leading to premium pricing or waiting lists at dealerships if the demand is high enough.
