Specifically, a Toyota Prius LE has established a Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption when driving from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States, with an average fuel consumption of 93.158 miles/gallon (2.5 liters/100km). With such high efficiency of a hybrid car, a gasoline-only car would have a hard time competing.

The journey of driver Wayne Gerdes started from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall, covering a distance of 3,211.7 miles (5,168.7 km). During the cross-country journey, he reached an altitude of 7,000 feet (2,100m) and passed through areas like the Mojave Desert, where temperatures reached over 105°F (40°C).
Toyota stated that the fuel consumption achieved by Mr. Gerdes is not typical, as according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Prius has an average fuel consumption of 4.1 liters/100km on mixed roads.
However, Mr. Gerdes also revealed some tips to help regular drivers save more fuel.
For example, he suggested accelerating slowly after each stop and maintaining a steady gas pedal to improve fuel efficiency. In addition, he advised people to release the gas pedal early when preparing to stop the car, using the vehicle's inertia as much as possible.
"For setting a record, detailed planning for the journey is required. You can't just go. You have to have a specific plan. But you also have to be able to adapt well. If there are changes, you have to change the plan accordingly. Reassess the route. Evaluate what you can do to achieve that goal," he said.
There is no information on how much fuel Mr. Gerdes used for this journey, as well as the fuel costs involved. Only that the Prius has a 11.3-gallon (43-liter) fuel tank, meaning he may have traveled 1,052 miles (1,693 km) on each tank, an impressive figure compared to the 644 miles (1,036 km) that Toyota announced.
