Toyota's MPV duo recalled for potential deformation in collisions

According to a recent announcement from Toyota Vietnam, the company has initiated a recall for two models, Veloz Cross and Avanza, in order to address a welding point issue on the vehicle floor. A total of 463 affected vehicles, manufactured between February 19 and March 21, are included in this recall.

The Toyota Veloz Cross accounts for 413 units in this recall, as it is more popular than the Avanza Premio (Illustrative image: Toyota Vietnam).

The manufacturer explained that the stiffener (the part welded inside the vehicle floor) on the left and right side of the affected vehicles may be missing a welding point. As a result, the component may come loose and affect the load-bearing capacity, potentially leading to deformation of the vehicle body in the event of a collision.

Customers owning vehicles included in the recall will receive notifications from Toyota dealerships inviting them to bring their vehicles in for inspection. The estimated time for inspection and repair per vehicle is around 0.7-1.9 hours, with no cost incurred.

By the end of the first 5 months of 2024, Toyota Avanza only sold 750 units, ranking near the bottom in the small MPV segment, just above the Hyundai Stargazer (574 units) (Illustrative image: Toyota Vietnam).

This is not the first time that the Toyota Veloz Cross and Avanza Premio models have been recalled in Vietnam. In January, a total of 6,641 vehicles of these models were recalled to tighten the front shock absorber bolts.

Vehicles affected by this recall may experience unusual noises due to loose shock absorber bolts at the front. In the worst-case scenario, this component may come loose, leading to unstable vehicle operation.
