The actions of the US and Philippines have put the entire region under the US' influence and posed a significant risk of war for the region, Chinese Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Wu Qian said in a press conference in Beijing on May 30, while also warning that such actions "seriously undermine regional peace."
Wu stated that China remains vigilant and opposes the US deployment of missile systems in the Indo-Pacific region.
"Medium-range missiles are strategic and offensive weapons with a strong Cold War flavor," Wu said.
In April, the US announced the deployment of Typhoon missile systems to the Philippines to participate in the Balikatan military exercise.
Philippine military official Colonel Michael Logico noted that the missile system had been taken to the city of Laoag in the province of Ilocos Norte, northern Philippines.
However, officials did not confirm whether the missile system had been transferred elsewhere or remained in the Philippines.
The Philippine and US military did not fire the missile system during the exercise, but Logico said it was deployed to test the feasibility of transporting a 40-ton weapon system by air.
This year's annual exercise involved around 16,000 Philippine and American troops. Some activities of the exercise were held on islands in northern Philippines near Taiwan and in the western sea facing the South China Sea.
The exercise faced opposition from China. Beijing has warned of instability as external powers "flaunt their strength and provoke confrontation" in the region.
Philippine and US officials stated that the exercise aimed to enhance interoperability between the forces of the two countries and not directed at any third country.
