VinFast VF 3 requires additional accessories priced at 4-6 million VND to charge at home

Pins, motors, and other components on electric cars will use direct current (DC) to operate. Meanwhile, the electricity used at home is alternating current (AC), so to charge an electric car, you will need a component called OBC (Onboard Charger) to convert AC electricity to DC.

Larger VinFast electric car models like the VF 3 or other electric car lines typically have the OBC integrated into the car. However, the VinFast VF 3 is not equipped with this component, meaning the car does not have the function of converting AC electricity to DC. Consequently, users can only charge the VF 3 with DC chargers.

VinFast announced the sale of home chargers for the VF 3 from August 15, but according to surveys, very few dealers have stock for customers to choose from at this time (Photo: VF).

On the market, most portable chargers and wall chargers are usually AC chargers, so they will not be suitable for the VF 3. To overcome this issue, VinFast separately sells a handheld charger for its mini car line, with two options.

Firstly, the standard handheld charger for the VF 3 is priced at 4 million VND, with a power of 2.2kW. Secondly, the 6 million VND charger not only functions as a home charger with a standard household outlet but also serves as an adaptor to be able to charge at public AC charging stations.

VinFast has not disclosed the power of the more expensive charger, but according to Dan Tri reporter sources, it also has a power of 2.2kW. This means that even if connected to a higher power AC charger (3.5kW, 7kW, or 11kW), it can only charge the VF 3 at a maximum power of 2.2kW.

According to the company, when charging at home for the VF 3, it can charge the battery from 10% to 70% in 5 hours. The battery of this car model has a capacity of 18.64kWh.

According to a survey on August 15, the number of VF 3 cars at VinFast dealerships has increased (Photo: Dinh Nam).

Opening the sale of handheld chargers will help VF 3 owners proactively charge at home and at public AC charging stations, reducing dependence on fast DC charging stations. This becomes increasingly important in the context where public charging stations of VinFast in general are becoming overloaded at many points in large cities.

The pressure on public charging stations in central areas continues to increase as the number of electric cars sold increases. In July alone, sources of Dan Tri reporters revealed that VinFast delivered around 4,000 electric cars. With the VF 3 model, the Vietnamese automaker aims to deliver at least 20,000 units in 2024.
