Volvo S60 Sedan discontinued in the US market

Volvo has announced its plan to discontinue the S60 Sedan model in the U.S. market, and the phase-out will be swift.

Automakers typically give customers several months' notice before officially pulling a model out of the market, but Volvo will stop production of the S60 in the U.S. market by the end of June.

Compared to its competitors, the S60 has been selling less. Volvo has never sold more than 20,000 units even at the peak of this compact sedan; sales have been around 10,000-12,000 units in the past three years.

Meanwhile, BMW and Mercedes-Benz both sold around 33,000 units of the 3-Series and C-Class sedans last year.

The S60 sold in the U.S. is manufactured at Volvo's plant in South Carolina. The plant is also currently producing the recently launched electric SUV, the EX90.

Volvo will continue to produce the S60 for other markets, but a spokesperson shared with Car and Driver that the company has no plans to import the S60 into the U.S.

The S60 model debuted in 2000 and has gone through three generations. Its design looks softer, more modern than the familiar boxy style that had been "nailed down" with the brand image from decades ago.

The car made its mark on the market with comfortable seating, stable driving, and a plug-in hybrid version that can run 66km entirely on electricity before switching to the petrol engine.

However, the era of electric cars has put an end to this luxury sedan. Americans no longer like sedans and Volvo is moving towards electrifying its entire product lineup by 2030.

The Swedish car brand currently does not have any electric sedan models but is focusing its resources on making electric vehicles in general, such as the large SUV EX90 and the small SUV EX30.

Americans who still like sedans have a few other options. However, the S90 is currently the slowest-selling model for the brand, so the likelihood of it being discontinued is also quite high. In April, Volvo sold around 2,300 S60 units in the U.S., while selling fewer than 100 S90 units.
