Electric vehicles registered in Vietnam: 2 new models from China

Previously granted copyright for certain details such as front/rear bumper, decorative grille, or alloy wheels in 2023, recently the duo Geometry G6 and M6 have been registered for the entire design in Vietnam by Geely. Both of these names are electric vehicles and are in the C-segment sedan and C-SUV segments, respectively.

Of note, Tasco and Geely have signed a joint venture agreement to produce automobiles. Accordingly, the plant in Thai Binh of these two units when operational will assemble Lynk & Co models, followed by future Geely brand products.

Therefore, Geometry G6 and M6 may be offered for sale in Vietnam as assembled vehicles. Registering industrial design copyrights does not necessarily mean that these 2 models will be introduced, but it also leaves open the possibility of distribution.

Geometry G6 and M6 were first introduced in China in August 2022. When launched, the G6 model will become one of the few pure electric sedan options in Vietnam, while the M6 may directly compete with VinFast VF e34 or VF7.

Currently, the only mainstream electric sedan model available is the BYD Seal. However, this Chinese model has a relatively high price as it is positioned in the D-segment sedan (1,119-1,359 billion VND).

The design of these two electric vehicles is quite similar with a closed grille but with a decorative grille located near the front bumper. On both sides are LED headlights integrated with a glowing logo in the middle using a thin LED strip, the car body has hidden door handles.

The overall look of the Geometry G6 is not too outstanding or rugged. Meanwhile, the M6 is more eye-catching with the rear sloping towards the rear section, featuring a coupe blend.

The interiors of Geometry G6 and M6 follow a minimalist and modern style, but somewhat similar to other Chinese electric models on the market. The car's steering wheel is flat-bottomed, integrated with paddle shifters, behind it is a 10.2-inch LCD digital instrument cluster.

All feature adjustments of the car will be done on the large central screen, using Huawei's HarmonyOS operating system. Some notable amenities include automatic air conditioning, sunroof, wireless phone charging, rear seats foldable... but the front seats do not have power adjustment.

In China, both Geometry G6 and M6 use the same electric motor with a maximum output of 150kW (approximately 201 horsepower) and a peak torque of 310Nm. According to the manufacturer's announcement, the car can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 150km/h.

Both electric models have 2 battery options: 53kWh and 70kWh, with corresponding operating ranges of 480km and 620km. The selling price is also equivalent, starting from 21,670 USD and up to 27,020 USD (converted to about 509-634 million VND).

Experts believe that Geometry G6 and M6 have a wide door to enter the Vietnamese market, amidst the government's many support policies for electric vehicles. For example, exempting 100% of registration fees until the end of February 2025, then transitioning to 50% from March 1, 2025 to February 28, 2027.

However, similar to many other Chinese electric vehicle brands on the market, Geometry G6 and M6 will have to face many disadvantages when competing if the company does not develop its own charging station system. Currently, VinFast alone develops a public charging station system but does not share it with other brands.

There have been some third-party units like EV One, Evercharge... developing public charging station systems but the coverage is not large, mainly focused on big cities and with few charging stations. In addition, the selling price is not attractive, reaching nearly 10,000 VND/kWh at fast charging stations.
